Interview with Choreographer Giana Thompson

Giana is currently getting her General Studies done at ACC. She moved to Austin when she was 2 years old. She graduated from McNeil HS in 2014. She would like to use her dance knowledge as something that she does personally or would love to be a librarian of dance and use it for preserving dance routines and artifacts.

For her 7th birthday, she had a tea party theme and the kids were to wear leotards. After that, she asked her mom what else she could do with her leotard. Her mom then signed her up for dance classes, where she fell in love with ballet.

The styles that she loves to perform and choreograph the most are contemporary and lyrical. She really appreciates how the professors at ACC are really knowledgeable and the people she dances with are really passionate about dancing. When asked if she prefers choreographing or perform more, she would’ve said until recently, that she likes performing more because it was comfortable to have choreography put on her. Now she would say she loves to choreograph and perform her own pieces. She is really enjoying this process. She doesn’t really have a specific choreographic process but, for this piece, she started with the movement and then picked the music. Social anxiety was her inspiration for this piece, specifically her own. She feels like she finally found something that helps and wanted to work through the process of finding that. This piece is a part of her healing. Her piece is entitled Active Recovery and the music is "For Now I Am Winter" by Olafur Arnalds.
