INTERVIEW WITH CHOREOGRAPHER KAYUR PATEL
Kayur Patel was born in India and has lived in Austin for 23 years. He truly enjoys collaborating with other artists while creating projects through dance. The Choreography/Composition class at ACC fulfills that enjoyment. He has been Influenced by lyrical, hip hop, and modern dance, and is inspired by anything that combines wordplay and storytelling. While taking the Choreography/Composition class, he feels that each student has a great opportunity to create a dance piece that can express thoughts and feelings. Kayur is creating his own section of the piece titled, “Why We Still Believe in Magic”, with the inspiration of finding a way to tie different themes together while showcasing human elements through dance. Kayur’s section of the piece speaks to the portals and transformations that humans go through and have gone through as a civilization. He highlights the ability of humans to get lost in the machined reality of the material world. He explores the interplay of the material and the natural world in hopes for the artists to find ways to traverse both boundaries. His part of the piece is sectioned into three different scores to highlight the different planes of existence: The material world, the transformation, and the natural world.
