Anna Catalina Nunez is a student originally from Costa Rica who has come to Austin to study as a full-time dance major. Between juggling five classes, she likes to stay inspired by movies like Shine and Youth. She enjoys modern dance and salsa as her main sources of inspiration when creating choreography and can be seen practicing them often. After graduating from ACC, she plans to enroll in a university to continue furthering her education in modern dance. In her own choreographed piece, she uses her current biology class as inspiration, naming her piece, Evolution. The dance is a physical representation of evolution from beginning to end. She wanted to emphasize the length that it takes and the metaphorical feeling behind the transformation of animals. Through her piece, she hopes the audience will feel the excitement that will change into calmness. Filming during a pandemic set some challenges while social distancing and sheltering in place. She felt limited in space, so filming outside was a must. The weather was also a challenge as it began fluctuating. She found it difficult to film parts on colder days. Through a pandemic and pressure from a time limit, she executed a well thought out piece that incorporates outside influences and a current ideology.

Watch her dance on film, Evolution, December 4 & 5 at 7:30 pm. Visit the  Austin Community College Dance Department page for tickets and live streaming information. 100% of contributions fund dance student scholarships.
